Quick Review:
I have never watched any Spongebob cartoons although I came to know the character from a short work stint with MTV many years ago. I know Spongebob had a best friend named Patrick Star and that was pretty much it. Oh boy, did I regret not knowing Spongbob and gang earlier after I finished this game.
SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated is a remake of the 2003 original game, with better visuals, a multi-player option (that I didn’t have the chance to test) and restored content that was cut from the original game.
The objective is simple: obtain as many golden spatulas as you can to help Spongebob defeat the robots that have overtaken Bikini Bottom. But because it is a 3D platform game, it ain’t so simple after all. You have to manoeuvre Spongebob, Patrick or Sandy through obstacles and solve puzzles. You get to explore the different areas of Bikini Bottom and interact with many beloved characters from the animated series: Squidward, Mr Krabs, Mrs Puff, etc.
It is hard not to like this game. Playing this game feels like I’m living an entire season of Spongbob cartoons. The visuals are bright and colourful (I had to tone it down in the videos because it was super saturated) and the character dialogues hilarious. I just wish the audio levels were better balanced; sometimes it gets super loud and at some parts super soft. And the camera controls can definitely be better, the last thing you want is to get blinded and have Spongebob toasted by a robot.
Many of us are still feeling the stresses of the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the economic aftereffects. Playing this game and submerging yourself in the world of Bikini Bottom provides a much-needed series of light moments and it is difficult not to have a smile on your face when you’re done with this game. ๐
