Unravel: Threading Life

Quick Review:

Unravel is a platform-puzzle game developed by Coldwood Interactive, a small, indie studio, and published by EA. You control Yarny, a character made of yarn and traverse through the game world that’s based on Scandinavia.

The game has no dialogue and text, save for a book that gives some context and you can access the book after you complete each level. While the story is not a strong point, it provides a nuanced and subliminal context behind Yarny’s journey.

Game design-wise, the Scandinavian environment is beautifully designed (Coldwood is a Swedish studio) and the developers nicely incorporated human-like mannerisms and expressions to Yarny. The game’s music ensures you are further encapsulated in the game. Gameplay-wise, Yarny needs to find ways to help him on his journey, from swinging like Spiderman (but on his yarn instead of web) to avoiding animals out to get you.

At a time when the world is still very unsettled by the COVID-19 pandemic and uncertainties, Unravel offers a message and a reminder of what truly matters in life.
