Call Of The Sea: I Wish There Was More

Quick Review:

The debut game developed by Spanish developers Out of the Blue, Call of the Sea “is a first-person adventure puzzle game set in the 1930s that tells the story of Norah, a woman on the trail of her missing husband’s expedition.

The search takes place on a strange but beautiful island in the South Pacific, filled with secrets waiting to be unearthed. It is an otherworldly tale of mystery, adventure, and self-discovery.

The game opens almost seemingly like any puzzle-adventure game. Your protagonist lands on an island in search of her missing husband and straight away you are on the look out for clues and solving puzzles that you come across.

Call Of The Sea is premised on a very interesting backstory and the environment design looks fantastic.

At times I find the game swaying between wanting to flesh out the interesting backstory while trying to balance the other elements, like the protagonist’s (Norah) relationship with her husband and her internal journey as the game progresses.

And then, there’s the monologue. Norah’s lines feel jarringly disconnected; in one moment she sounded terribly concerned or horrified, and the next interaction she come across will have her sounding chirpy again, as if nothing had happened. I give credits to the voice actress whom I feel gave her best for the lines she had, though the scripting and voice acting direction could have been better.

I didn’t have that much to say after my first playthough but after editing and reviewing the gameplay, I really wished the game’s story could be fleshed out more because there is potentially much to explore and much more interesting if the story was expanded. Nonetheless, Call Of The Sea is still an enjoyable game especially if you are into puzzle-adventure games.
