Psychonauts 2: Deserving of its Game of the Year nomination

Quick Review:

For all the turbulence surrounding the game’s developement, Pyschonauts 2 end up being one of the most fun and well-produced games in recent years.

Psychonauts 2 continues where Psychonaut left off but it wasn’t an issue for someone like me with no knowledge of the previous game. The game opens with a quick recap of the events in the first Pyschonaut game and the intro chapter orientates its players with the controls while setting the premise for what would be a great story that will unfurl throughout the game.

The developers did a wonderful job of creating Alice-in-Wonderland type of environments that represents the psyche of several characters. One aspect of the game that the developers wanted to explore was mental health, evident by the peppering of several mental themes in metaphors. They made sure to approach the topic in the best possible light by working with a mental health non-profit organization.

“You can’t help but have empathy I think, once you’re inside someone else’s mind, seeing the world through their eyes and seeing what they’re struggling with,” he said. “It’s that basic good advice you get hopefully when you’re younger, which is to be kind to people because you never know what they’re going through.”

– Tim Schafer, founder of Double Fine Productions (quote taken from http://www.gamesindustry.biz)

The heavy themes aside, Psychonauts 2 is one of the best produced and highly entertaining games that well deserves of its numerous accolades and awards, including a Game of the Year nomination.
